Brightness - Brightness (CD ALBUM (1 DISC)) Brightnessis the self-titled, much anticipated follow up to Newcastle-based artist, Alex Knight's 2017 EP Teething. From the ripsaw chorus of "Old Crow" to the fragile piano ballad "Feathers," Knight employs the full spectrum of his psych-rock toolkit toward rendering a sense of helpless awe. He traveled to Woodstock, the upstate New York town rich with utopian history, to record the album, bringing in producer Sam Griffin Owens (akaSam Evian) to help him expand and refine his sound. Knight had been listening to music that approached trance like meditativeness while writing the album, like slowcorestalwarts Low and ambient experimentalist Grouper. He'd also absorbed the now-or-never urgency of PJ Harvey, Bruce Springsteen, and Deftones. On Brightness, both of these sound worlds collide in a pastoral wash. Knight sings with immediate, needling desire for something he's willingto wait forever to get, a paradox that suspends the record in a perpetual loop of jaw-grinding tension and sublime release.
