LOVE WITHOUT LIMITS...
Sappho is a provocative, passionate and enthralling love story, set on the Greek island of Lesbos in the 1920’s. The film centres on a modern day love triangle between a newly-wed American couple, Sappho and Phil, just arrived on the island for their honeymoon, and the daughter of a Russian émigré archaeologist, Helene.
As the three form a complex and scandalous ménage a trios, Sappho comes to believe that she is the reincarnation of the ancient poetess Sappho who first put the "lesbian" in Lesbos. As the present and the past seem to merge together, our modern day Sappho is lead to an act which repeats the passionate death of the ancient poetess.
Sappho stars a trio of talented young actors, Avalon Barrie, Todd Soley and Lyudmila Shiryaeva as well as Ukrainian star Bogdan Stupka. The film also features beautiful cinematography by Baghir Rafiyev.
Sappho was inspired by the surviving poems and the legend of the poetess Sappho, one of the greatest love-poets of all time and trumped the all-time box-office record for a locally-produced movie in Ukraine on its premiere release. The music is by world-famous Greek composer Mikis Theodorakis (Zorba the Greek).
Starring Avalon Barrie (Alien Presence), Todd Soley, Lyudmila Shiryaeva, and Ukrainian veteran screen actor Bogdan Stupka. Winner of Best Feature Film – Cyprus International Film Festival 2008; prizes for best direction, best cinematography, best production design and best music.
