During combat in Vietnam, Richard loses his hearing in a bomb blast and is returned to civilian life where he struggles to cope on a daily basis with his newfound disability. Disarmed by the lack of support for the disabled and Vietnam veterans, Richard’s path to self-discovery takes him through the social upheaval of the Sixties and Seventies, where determination and a deep love for his friend and confident Art, a young genius suffering cerebral palsy, force him into politics. His personal triumphs through the Eighties culminate in the Nineties, when the Americans with Disabilities Act, a piece of legislation that he helped pass, becomes the law of the land.
