In 1887, in the town of Huelva, Spain, a spirited young woman named Kathleen (Natalia Quesnel) is being raised by her tyrannical uncle, Mr. Crown (Bernard Hill), manager of the English run Rio Tinto copper mines. As the locals begin suffering the harsh effects from the toxic fumes emitted by the unforgiving mines, Crown turns his back on the pleas of the local community until a Cuban revolutionary arrives and begins to rally against the conglomerate. In response Crown brings in the military resulting in a bloody massacre of the protesters.
Fifteen years later, Baxter (Joaquim de Almeida) arrives, accompanied by his bodyguard Robert (Philip Winchester), to take over from Mr. Crown’s unflinching rule. To complicate his transition into power, Robert becomes infatuated with Crown’s daughter Kathleen (Sienna Guillory) and her free-thinking friend, Blanca (Catalina Sandino Moreno), as the town finds itself once again caught in a tidal wave of rebellion, this time lead by the passionate Carlos (Fernando Ramallo) who forces Baxter to decide whether his reign will be that of a tyrant or a liberal.
