Product Overview

Collector's Edition (2 Disc Set)

Before Video, before the Internet and before Digital Television, one man delivered the world of cinema into American homes, uncut and without commercials, and created a revolution.

Launched in Los Angeles during 1974 to little fan fare, Z Channel was one of Americaìâs first pay cable stations. However it wasnìât until 1980 when maverick programmer Jerry Harvey took over as Z Channelìâs Head of Programming that the station reached legendary status within the homes of Hollywoods most influential players and future pariahs.

Z Channel: A Magnificent Obsession chronicles Harveyìâs emergence as a brilliant programmer who revolutionized what movies Americans could watch. But as Z Channel soared to new heights, Harveyìâs emotional and physiological descent was as brutally rapid, cumulating in a shocking murder/suicide and the eventual demise of Z Channel itself.

Directed by Xan Cassavetes, the daughter of legendary filmmaker Jon Cassavetes, Z Channel includes interviews with Robert Altman, Jim Jarmusch, Alexander Payne, Quentin Tarantino, Paul Verhoeven, Jacqueline Bisset, Theresa Russell, James Woods, F.X. Feeney and many, many more. Features clips from such renowned films as Das Boot, The Wild Bunch, Salvador, Dr. Strangelove, The Empire Strikes Back, Heavenìâs Gate, La Strada, McCabe & Mrs. Miller, Once Upon a Time in America, Pandoraìâs Box, Paths of Glory, Turkish Delight, A Safe Place and many others.
